Over Labor Day weekend Timber and I went to Sparks, Nevada for the 22nd annual best of the West Rib Cookoff held at the Nugget Hotel and Casino. It was truly a carnivore's paradise! Timber and I tried ribs from 10 different places (they had 24 rib establishments represented). We tried the rib sampler (3 to 4 ribs) from each of the 10 that we tried, and the cost was between $6 - $7. Out of the 10 that we tried we through the ones from Arkansas and Famous Dave's were the best ribs. One thing that I realized about tasting ribs and comparing them is that it usually comes down to preference. Obviously everyone there knows how to make ribs, but different people prefer different things in their ribs. For instance I prefer ribs that come right off the bone, but not too easily, and I want them to be fairly moist and not dry. I also want them to have good natural flavor without bbq sauce. If you have even a passing interest in ribs and BBQ you have to check out the Rib Cookoff at some point. Make sure to bring your appetite!
